In Production : Magdalen's Florence
"People are always asking me why when I live in such a beautiful city, do I write about murder. For me, Florence inspires stories about murder. It contains thousands of stories about amazing murders. I don't find it pretty, I don't find it quaint. It's had a very, very bloody history.'
In this film, Magdalen Nabb, author of the Marshal Guarnaccia series of detective novels based in Florence, takes us around this, her home city, on a personal Grand Tour. We travel from the Piazza Duomo to Piazzale Michelangelo, overlooking the city. On the way, we pass the Uffizi, the Palazzo Pitti and other historical sites, each with their own murderous secret to tell. Throughout this trip, the renaissance and the modern coincide with tales of true crime, many of which have provided inspiration for Magdalen's fiction. Loose reconstructions based on her crime writing punctuate the tour and encourage us to reassess our impressions of this mecca of tourism once seen through the eyes of a crime writer.
