Video Stories : "Qash"-ing In
(IFAD/CNN World Report) 2008
The global rise in food prices is having a devastating effect on the rural poor in developing countries. This report features an isolated community in Tanzania called Qash and illustrates what can happen when smallholder farmers get access to both credit and storage facilities for their grains, thanks to a government assisted Warehouse Receipt System.
In particular, the video tells the story of one woman, Maimuna Ikango, who stores her grains and then finds an innovative way to invest her profits in the World Cup.
From a communication perspective, this report demonstrates that it is possible to take a complex agricultural project and make it meaningful to policy makers and legislators as well as to a TV audience. It has been used at high level conferences, policy making and replenishment meetings and has also aired on international current affairs networks, CNN and Deutsche-Welle.
